Through hands-on training and formal learning opportunities we will give members the skills needed to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. President's Message Dear Friends,   I hope you had a restful and fulfilling Easter weekend with your loved ones.    March was a great month for our Junior League. Our GMM brought in a great crowd to participate in our annual business meeting. We voted on executive leadership for the 2024-2025 year, as well as voted on changes to our bylaws, which include requiring member obligations again after a brief, two-year hiatus. Our organization’s Bylaws and Policies & Procedures are both available in the Member Area of our website.    We also hosted our last recruitment event of the fiscal year, which ends on May 31. Our new member count is up to 19 for the year. As a reminder, our 2023-2024 goal is 15. This is a wonderful accomplishment and I want to express my gratitude to all our members for helping us reach this goal. Thank you!   Our annual beach clean up on March 24 rallied over two dozen members and families to help keep Martin beautiful. It was a beautiful day to give back to our community and spend quality time together.    This is all just a brief snapshot of the great things March brought our organization. As we approach the end of our fiscal year, I encourage you to make the most of our remaining opportunities to engage, including the Annual Active & Sustainer Mixer on April 9, Spring Soirée on the 13th, the April GMM on the 16th and much more. Please enjoy the following newsletter for the latest and greatest in JLMC. President's Message Dear Friends,   What a great winter the Junior League of Martin County is having! As we approach a new season, I must express my enthusiastic gratitude for the wonderful turnout of attendance and participation in our League since our Virtual Town Hall. Each of you is what makes our organization so special and I am so pleased to see the kind of engagement that's needed for JLMC to succeed. Thank you!   In 2022, we initiated a five-year plan to add at least 15 new members annually. By 2027, with current members retained and new members joined, our goal is to bring our active roster back up to over 100 members. I am so proud to share that we have gained 13 new members in this league year thus far. With Membership's continued efforts and your support, I'm confident we will reach our goal before the end of the year on May 31. Thank you to all who help recruit and retain our membership, and thank you to all our new members for volunteering your time, treasure, and talents to our nonprofit.   As a reminder from previous communications, our leadership is always trying to improve our processes to create the best experience for members. In this effort, we implore you to share your feedback and ideas with your assigned Advisor so we can learn what's working well and what has room for improvement.   Please plan on attending the March General Membership Meeting (GMM), which will also be our annual voting meeting. The slate of officers and proposed bylaw amendments were shared last month. Quorum is required to have the vote, so your attendance is very important! Through hands-on training and formal learning opportunities we will give members the skills needed to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. President's Message Dear Friends,   At the end of last year, it came to my attention that there has been a lot of confusion throughout the League. In an effort to help level-set with members, the Board of Directors executed a series of initiatives over the past month, not least of which was the Virtual Town Hall on January 31. For a full reminder of these efforts, please refer back to the January Newsletter. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Winter Member Survey. The questions and comments included in those responses, as well as the feedback we heard at last month's committee meetings really guided our efforts in the Town Hall presentation. The reactions thus far have been incredibly positive. Please continue to let your Advisor know what you thought of the Town Hall and what questions you may have so the appropriate League Leader can provide you with support. The presentation and a comment form will be available online soon. Leadership is continuing to work together to strengthen our processes and programming for members, particularly in New & Transfer Member Onboarding. We would love to hear your feedback in your own experience. Please share your onboarding experience with your Advisor so leaders can make the appropriate considerations in our new plans. In addition to all the efforts that leadership is making, I want to remind you, as a member, of the power you hold within this organization. I challenge you to take accountability for your experience as a member by participating, engaging, asking questions, learning, and diving in head first. One of the greatest things about the Junior League of Martin County is that every single member has the ability to shape and transform the organization. There is every opportunity for your voice to be heard. You just have to speak up. Please read through this month's newsletter. This is a great resource for the month ahead and also contains a wealth of information that can benefit your understanding of our Junior League.   Gratefully, Taylor Gilmour, MPP, CFRE President The Junior League of Martin County www.JLMCFlorida.org (mobile) 772.349.5805 News and Updates 2023-2024 Impact Initiatives Through hands-on training and formal learning opportunities we give members the skills needed to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. To continue the Junior League's tradition of identifying problems and finding solutions in a collaborative way, we focus our community projects, training opportunities, fundraising, and advocacy on initiatives that fall into our impact areas. President's Message Dear Friends,   Happy New Year! It feels like just yesterday we were still enjoying summer at our League Kick Off at Sailor's Return. In the blink of an eye, we're already ringing in the new year! I hope everyone had a fabulously fun and healthy holiday season.  A tradition of mine as part of my preparations for a new year is to have an honest reflection of the past year. It isn't always pretty or comfortable, but I attribute a lot of my personal and professional growth over the years to this practice. I'm grateful to have the honor of including JLMC in my reflections this year. It's come to my attention that there's a lot of confusion throughout the League. It's always been my hope, and the hope of the rest of our League leaders, to empower fellow members and leave this organization a little better than we found it. There's been so much great work completed in the first half of this year, and I'm excited to share some upcoming opportunities for you to learn more about how we're positioning the organization for a successful future and also to ask any burning questions you may have. Winter Member Survey. Throughout each year, the Advisory-Nominating Committee coordinates member surveys, which are shared with the Board of Directors to learn what's going well and the areas for improvement. Your engagement in these surveys helps drive change for how this League operates and how it's governed. Complete the survey here. President & Vice President Committee Meeting Visits. Throughout the month, Lara and I will attend each committee meeting. We want to hear from each of you, in an intimate setting, what questions, concerns, challenges, etc. are. Whether you want to learn more about your committee responsibilities or about the league as a whole, we are excited to hear from you! Connect with your committee chair for meeting details. Advisory-Nominating Committee Meeting: TBD Community Committee Meeting: January 23 at 6:00 pm Fund Development Committee Meeting: TBD Membership Committee Meeting: January 11 at 6:30 pm Virtual Town Hall. Based on the questions/comments we receive in the survey and committee meeting visits, the Board of Directors will collaborate on a presentation to provide more information, clarity, and context. With special emphasis on our budget and financial information, we'll share context on recent history of our league, detail on where we're at now and how we're positioning our organization for success in the future. Communications will be shared later. Save the date for January 31 at 6 pm. New & Transfer Member Connections. We're collaborating with Membership and Advisory-Nominating to create ongoing opportunities to connect with new members and transfers and provide further league education to support this transition and enhance member experience. Member & Leader Onboarding. We're developing an improved framework and comprehensive plan for onboarding of members and JLMC leaders each year. And we're giving further consideration to how and when we start our League year moving forward. In addition to these opportunities, I challenge each of you to take accountability for your experience as a member in this organization. Engage, participate, show up, ask questions, share ideas, advocate for yourself, inquire and investigate. One of the greatest things about our small league is that every member has the ability to shape and transform this league. There is every opportunity for your voice to be heard. Vision Women as catalysts for lasting community change. Through hands-on training and formal learning opportunities we will give members the skills needed to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. President's Message Dear Friends,   I hope your Halloween was full of sweet treats, spooky ghouls, happy kids, and scary screams! Though the weather doesn't show it, we have officially entered holiday season For myself and many others, work and other life commitments are particularly busy this time of year, making it easy to forget the reason for the season. My hope for all of us this year is that we're able to stay present, feel grateful, and enjoy the special time with our loved ones. At our GMM last month, the Membership Committee hosted our first inaugural Chilli Cook-Off. Several members entered their chili into the blind tasting contest and others chipped in to complete the meal with cornbread, salad, and more. I am pleased to share that Lara Bailey won first place in the cook-off. Congratulations, Lara! I hope you'll all keep perfecting your recipes and join us in our second annual cook-off next fall. Jamie Bond, from Place of Hope, joined our GMM to teach us more about  the issues and prevalence of human trafficking, domestic violence, and poverty in our community. We learned what Place of Hope is doing to meet the needs of those afflicted by these issues, and we also learned what each of us catalysts of change can do to help. We also had a brief reaffirmation of our new mission statement: to advance women's leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. We achieve our mission through: Volunteer action — service opportunities coordinated by Community Committee Training — workshops, conferences, serving in leadership roles, learning how to plan and execute a large-scale fundraising event like Reindeer Dash, etc. Collaboration — by collaborating with other community leaders (policymakers, change-makers, nonprofits, etc.) we can (1) learn more about issues impacting our community; (2) become educated advocates; and (3) leverage our skills and leadership to create change for the better. Through these channels, we advance leadership amongst ourselves, to create meaningful community impact. What kind of community impact is determined by our impact areas and initiatives, voted on by all our members earlier this year. In the spirit of the season, I want to take a moment to tell you all how grateful I am to each of you. I am grateful for your friendship, for the unique experiences we all share together, and for helping make me a better person and leader. Amongst what I hope is a very long list of things you're thankful for this year, I hope the Junior League of Martin County is one of them. Gratefully, Taylor Gilmour, MPP, CFRE President The Junior League of Martin County www.JLMCFlorida.org News and Updates Impact Areas Survey Results Through hands-on training and formal learning opportunities we give members the skills needed to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. To continue the Junior League's tradition of identifying problems and finding solutions in a collaborative way, we focus our community projects, training opportunities, fundraising, and advocacy on initiatives that fall into our impact areas. President's Message Dear Friends, Our League Year officially kicked off this past week, with Sunset at Sailor's! It was a fabulous evening of reconnection and fun with our fellow members and friends. And the night's sunset did not disappoint! Thank you, Laura Baird, and the Membership Committee for coordinating this event. I mentioned last month that our Board of Directors and Management Team have been hard at work these past few months planning for the upcoming year. In this new year, we are grounding our efforts in member recruitment, education, and engagement, while clarifying our impact initiatives. I am so pleased to share that we have already had a number of new members and transfers join our League this summer. Welcome Alex Adams, Samantha Conway, Morgan Karr, Leslie Fidler, Joanna Mangan, Brooke Martson and Roxanna Scaffidi! We are absolutely thrilled to have you and we can't wait to get to know each of you more throughout this upcoming year! We will welcome our newest members at the start of each monthly GMM. There is a lot of information in this month's newsletter. If email isn't your thing, you can also read our monthly newsletters in the Member News page of our website. I hope, by now, you have learned that we are moving away from Basecamp and taking advantage of all of the features that our mobile-friendly website has to offer. If you haven't already, please do take some time to explore the pages available in the Member Area, including news, calendar events, committee announcements, resources, our league photo gallery, and more. I cannot wait to see you all at our first General Membership Meeting (GMM) of the year, on September 19. Please RSVP for the meeting online. With the history behind this event - the Pineapple Ball being a successful event for 12 years - the onset of COVID delaying the original date in 2020 - and now the still existing concern around COVID as it relates to all our members, including sustainers Everyone involved has decided that it is best that we do not hold Pineapple Palooza this year. Additionally, the Lunafest event has been cancelled as well. In order to offset these events, the fundraising team in conjunction with the board has determined that they will launch the "Little Black Dress Initiative" with the members. We are a small league with a big punch and have had our hands in a lot of volunteer work, whether it is helping other organizations or fundraising money for a better purpose, JLMC faces have been involved with so much and were not done! Our goal this year was and is to connect with the community and let it be known that we are eager and willing to help in many different ways to better our community and the families that reside here.   Since the beginning of our season (September) we have partnered with Keep Martin Beautiful in helping spread the word and bring awareness on how to keep our waterways healthy and clean! This is such an important topic to be involved in and we hope to continue our efforts in helping Keep Martin Beautiful. In November, we were all hands-on deck at the Community Thanksgiving hosted by M.I.S.S at the Martin County Fairgrounds! We had so much fun distributing food, giving a helping hand and dancing the night away in celebration of the coming holidays, what a fabulous event to take part in. December was a month to remember! Each year, Junior League helps support United Way in their toy drive. From assisting with the setup, to donating bikes then having the pleasure of sharing in the excitement with the parents receiving those bikes to give to their children is truly what the holiday spirit is all about! We are not only about giving our time, but we also held our first of two, Books for Kids, Book Drive at Barnes & Noble. Twice a year, Barnes & Noble generously opens their doors to the JLMC and helps us generate money to donate books to our public schools! Experiencing how many businesses are willing to help a great cause is truly where you find the magic in Junior League. There is no other organization that can educate you in so many facets of where help is needed and help you learn all that the community has to offer! This year has been an awesome experience so far and we look forward to continuing our work in the community.   We are pleased to share that our Nominating Committee nominated the following members for awards in our community.  Lauren Betsinger for Soroptimist of Stuart; A Women of Distinction who demonstrates high ethical standards personally, is a recognized role model, has a strong sense of community responsibility and is outstanding in her contributions within Martin County. We have also nominated Keri Gustafson for dream catcher award for Tykes and Teens which is someone who embodies the vibrant spirit and determination that made Dolores Ripper (long-time resident of Martin County and philanthropist) special and has demonstrated a substantial positive impact on the lives of children, either as a professional, a volunteer, or a philanthropist. We wish our ladies and those nominated the best of luck!   Upcoming Events: The Junior League of Martin County is hosting LUNAFEST® for its 5th consecutive year! First year teachers often find themselves with a shortage of books to stock their classroom libraries. The Junior League addressed this need by donating over 3,500 books to all 12 Elementary schools in Martin County and this year will be focusing on the middle schools.
